TANGO 201 - INTRODUCTION TO SALON STYLE
5-WEEK SERIES, WEDNESDAYS, 9-10:30PM, STARTING MAY 13TH, $65
with Mitra Martin
and Stefan Fabry
Salon style is characterized by both partners being on their own axis and by a flexible embrace that allows for more rotations of the hips of both partners. We can contrast it with dancing apilado, as we do in Milonguero style dancing, where we have full frontal contact and torsion is minimized.

Salon style dancing is popular socially in the US, Europe, and Argentina today, and is the foundation for dancing “Nuevo Tango,” which some consider as a modern form of Salon. In this class we will work primarily with the rich music of Carlos Di Sarli, which was the hallmark of Salon style in the 1940s and 1950s. This five-week course introduces the Tango student who is familiar with the basics of dancing on-the-body to the fundamental concepts of the Salon, a challenging and exciting way to dance. Prerequisites are Tango 101-104 or instructor's permission. |
VIDEO GLOSSARY
Example of Milonguero Style: See how the tummies touch! And the embrace barely changes, even in turns. [BTW he’s still leading when he reverses the embrace] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bcze1eiCc3k
Example of Salon Style: An intimate and changing embrace that allows for space between the partners. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pL9r4NURca0
Example of Nuevo Style: Using the basic principles of Salon Style in terms of axis, but adding more dynamism, more creativity with the embrace. Worth it to work toward!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfp6rNFSgvc
